Work Plan

The Work Plan is a key enabler in 3GPP and is about to become a key tool in the planning of TISPAN Release 2.

The left part of the Gantt chart contains the names and attributes of the Work Items, the right part contains a calendar view reflecting the work progress (blue and grey lines apply to foreseen tasks, black lines apply to completed tasks).  The indentation of Work Item names reflects the hierarchical level in the tree structure (Features, Building Blocks, and Work Tasks).  The Work Plan is maintained in Microsoft Project.  For a wider audience, an image is also available in HTML.

Work Plans for 3GPP and ETSI TISPAN are provided by the ETSI support staff prior to Plenary meetings of these two standards groups.

Release Features

To meet market requirements, 3GPP and TISPAN specifications are being enhanced with new features.

TISPAN is presently examining the mechanism for maintaining its Release 1 specifications, and tracking the IMS dependencies in 3GPP. At the same time TISPAN is writing NGN Release 2 specifications.
TISPAN Release 1           TISPAN Release 2

  • Completed at TISPAN#9 (December 2005)
  • Provides the first set of implementable NGN specifications
that are being used by industry to build the NGN.
  • Main features
    • Core IP Multimedia Subsystem and its relationship
      to other TISPAN NGN components
    • Network Attachment Subsystem (NASS)
    • Resource and Admission Control Subsystem (RACS)
    • PSTN/ISDN Emulation Subsystem (PES)
    • PSTN/ISDN Simulation Services (PSS)
  • Evolution of RACS
    • Resource control in the core
    • Towards End-to-end QoS
  • Evolution of NASS (Additional access technologies)
    • Fixed access via xDSL (e.g. ADSL)
    • wLAN via xDSL (e.g. IEEE802.11)
    • WiMAX etc..
  • Requirements analysis for home networking (in cooperation with e.g. HGI).
  • Requirements for network capabilities to support IPTV services (in cooperation with e.g. ATIS IIF and DVB).
  • IPTV Integration of NGN Services and Capabilities using IMS
  • Support of Business Services and Enterprise Network interworking

3GPP is working on Releases up to release 8 - See links below for details of the time-frames and content.

The list of specifications needed for each 3G and GSM release is listed in the Technical Report mentioned in the table below  (Available on-line at http://www.3gpp.org/specs/releases.htm).
